Welcome to the Trauma-Informed Practices Institute

Quote by Pema ChodronThe Trauma-Informed Practices Institute is dedicated to teaching trauma-informed intervention that integrates neurodevelopment, somatic approaches, mindfulness, and positive psychology. In particular, it supports the use of creative arts therapies including art therapy, music therapy and movement therapy, play therapy, integrative expressive arts therapies, and mind-body approaches for recovery and wellness in children, adults and families. These approaches assist individuals in learning how mind and body respond to the sensory aspects of traumatic events and how to enhance personal resilience and posttraumatic growth.

The Institute offers courses, workshops, supervision and consultation for mental health, healthcare and allied heath professionals and students on trauma-informed practice. Courses taught by Institute faculty are based on principles of creative arts therapies, expressive therapies and somatic approaches. These practices are informed by contemporary research in trauma intervention, neurodevelopment and related fields.

" All adults and children have the potential to retell their experiences through creative expression, particularly when their therapists recognize and utilize the power of art, play, stories, music, writing and movement to transform suffering..." from Creative Interventions with Traumatized Children

What are the creative arts therapies and why are they important to trauma-informed practice? Creative arts therapies are approaches that apply many forms of self-expression (art, music, writing, storytelling, play, dramatic enactment, music and movement) to promote health and well-being. Because traumatic experiences are not always accessible with words, creative forms of communication can be helpful for many people. These approaches are not only for children; adults including those who have survived childhood trauma and interpersonal violence and returning military who are challenged by posttraumatic stress disorder can benefit from creative arts therapies. They complement mind-body interventions and mindfulness practices and help people to become active participants in their recovery.
